One common <a href=\"https:\/\/bakeschool.com\/a-guide-to-baking-substitutions\/\">baking substitution<\/a> would be to replace the all-purpose flour with whole wheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This works well in the recipe below. Brown sugar will give the pumpkin bread more flavour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>eggs<\/strong>, specifically large eggs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>pure vanilla extract<\/strong>, either <a href=\"https:\/\/bakeschool.com\/how-to-make-vanilla-extract\/\">homemade<\/a> or store-bought<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>pumpkin pur\u00e9e<\/strong>, either canned or strained homemade pumpkin pur\u00e9e to remove excess water. Read about <a href=\"https:\/\/bakeschool.com\/homemade-pumpkin-puree-for-baking\/\">homemade pumpkin pur\u00e9e<\/a> if you are unsure about how to remove the water and why<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>icing sugar<\/strong>, also called powdered sugar, tends to clump and you may have to sift it before using<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cream cheese<\/strong>\u2014I prefer to make cream cheese frosting with <em>Philadelphia brand full-fat cream cheese<\/em> (the kind sold in <strong>blocks<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please see the recipe card for the exact ingredients and quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"substitutions-and-variations\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Substitutions and Variations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a simple recipe like this one, your options for making substitutions are limited. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind, depending on what you want to make:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list feast-feature\">\n<li><strong>Flour<\/strong> - instead of whole wheat flour, you can use regular bleached all-purpose flour but, obviously, it won't be whole-wheat pumpkin bread anymore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Butter<\/strong> - you can replace the butter in the cake recipe with canola oil (or another neutral-tasting vegetable oil).
