I used this pur\u00e9e to make this gorgeous <a href=\"https:\/\/bakeschool.com\/maple-bourbon-sweet-potato-pie\/\">maple bourbon sweet potato pie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n[feast_advanced_jump_to]\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 id=\"types-of-sweet-potato-for-puree\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Types of Sweet Potato for Pur\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet potatoes range in colour and shape, though in North America, we think most commonly of the orange-fleshed tuber. If you want to make a filling for pies or use sweet potato pur\u00e9e in muffins and cakes, opt for the <strong>Jewel or Garnet sweet potato varieties<\/strong>, which have orange-brown or reddish-brown skin and orange flesh. These create a flavourful pur\u00e9e that isn't too wet nor too dry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Japanese varieties of sweet potato that are white inside tend to be drier and firmer. Pick either Jewel or Garnet varieties which are best for baking with. Don't use Japanese varieties that are less sweet and more firm. These are not the best for making pur\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See the recipe card for exact quantities and ingredients.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"substitutions-and-variations\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Substitutions and Variations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer the flavour of homemade sweet potato pur\u00e9e to the pur\u00e9e in a can. But if you are short on time, you can purchase canned sweet potato pur\u00e9e for baking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you can't find canned sweet potato, the best substitute is canned pumpkin, but obviously you will be making pumpkin muffins and pies if you go that route!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list feast-feature\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"ways-to-cook-sweet-potatoes-for-puree\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ways to Cook Sweet Potatoes for Pur\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to cook sweet potato and you should pick the method that works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Microwave<\/strong>\u2014Pierce the flesh through the skin to make air holes in the tubers, then place them in the microwave. Microwave them on high for five minutes, pausing to check on them every so often. Microwave until soft, testing with a fork or the tip of a sharp knife to make sure the sweet potatoes are cooked through.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roast<\/strong>\u2014Roast them whole. You want to roast until soft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boil (least preferred method)<\/strong>\u2014Peel the pumpkin, remove the seeds, and cut it into big pieces, then boil until tender. Drain well and pat until perfectly dry before blending in a food processor until smooth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"making-sweet-potato-puree-in-the-microwave\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Sweet Potato Pur\u00e9e in the Microwave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with unblemished sweet potatoes that you've washed and scrubbed to remove any dirt. You can bake with homemade sweet potato pur\u00e9e right away without any extra steps!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"storage\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Storage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet potatoes are low acidity, with a pH above 4.6. For this reason, it is not acidic enough for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bakeschool.com\/home-canning-starter-kit-a-giveaway-from-bernardin\/\">home canning<\/a>\u00a0processes as is. When you make a batch of homemade sweet potato pur\u00e9e, you have to store it in the fridge for short periods, or in the freezer for longer periods.
